alphabet, E, learning, letters

For letter E, I figured we have an easier time remembering…but it’s kinda the same story as D was…he can’t really remember what to call the letter. Though he identifies it as the one we’re on. Maybe this approach isn’t working???  I’ll keep at it for awhile but if this trend continues we may scrap it and try something else…what, I’m not sure yet.

There’s about a million “E’s” all over the house since there’s always a ton of E’s in the poster-letter packs – which is what we’re using for letters around the house.

The elephant we made really isn’t all that elegant – and Logan wasn’t sure what that meant. So he’s our Excited Elephant.

Lohg really doesn’t eat eggs. He’ll try them, as he does all foods. But he practically gags everytime. So I’m not forcing the issue on this food.

I also didn’t write “EAR” on his ear. We talked about it, but didn’t think it would be worth the trouble of labeling his tiny ear-lobe since it’s nearly impossible to see your own ear!

Kind of at a loss for “E.” Feel like I’m burning out! But maybe it’ll get better with the more exciting letters coming up :)

Letter E day:

  • Exciting Elephant paper craft (seen first at Totally Tots.)
  • Elephant
  • Eggshell Crafts
  • Egg-dying
  • Envelope
  • Eating
  • Songs: Do Your Ears Hang Low
  • Label “E” body parts: Ears
  • Special snacks: Eggs (hard boiled esp)

alphabet, D, learning, letters

Well…our household has been a bit under the weather lately. So the name of the game has been survival. In fact if you knocked on my door I would be mortified of the mess inside my house. *sigh*  But that’s just not as important as sleep and Logan’s play time.  But we’ve been slowly plugging through letters. Really slowly.

Letter D was virtually unknown to him for some reason. He always identifies it as the letter with a “straight line in back and one bump in front”. But can’t remember to label it as “D.”  Not sure why. But I finally moved on. Beating it to death isn’t going to help and we just weren’t progressing. Definitely on the list to re-visit later.

Anyway…for our D days we dug out the old dinosaur costume (he wore when he was about 1-year-old – we pretended it was a crocodile at the time) and he REALLY wanted to wear the whole costume. So we tried it on…

And unbelievably it went on!!!  I’m pretty sure he’s sporting a major wedgie under that tail though. He was in heaven until he started overheating.  We did a bunch of other activities, but I’m tired. So I’m going to list them below and post the picture of the “dangerous dinosaur” we made out of the letter D.

I sure hope we find some energy around here. We’re mostly well now, just still really tired!

Letter D day:

  • Dangerous Dinosaur paper craft  (see above)
  • Daddy
  • Dolphin
  • Dog
  • Deer
  • Dragonflies
  • Duck
  • Dragon
  • Diapers
  • Diamond
  • Donkey
  • Doctor
  • Dots
  • Doll
  • Dime
  • Dollar
  • Dancing
  • Songs: We Are the Dinosaurs
  • Label “D” body parts: Dimples
  • Special snacks: Doughnuts

boxes, candy, hearts, kids, scavenger hunt, Valentine

Well…when you’re a mom sometimes the romance is small…and sometimes it’s just a day to celebrate love in all it’s forms!

We focused on Logan more this year. So I cut about 100 hearts and put them all over the house (we also skipped to letter V – can’t miss this opportunity! – we’ll revisit in order too). And put ribbon on the hand rail to try to catch his attention when he first got up. And it did!

The view coming down the stairs

He even started looking for all the new hearts that were all over the rest of the house…

And since it snowed before and it was pretty warm he got to play outside with a few of the neighbors. One dad even made a snow chair that was a big hit with the kids!

And then his Daddy had class until 8pm…so no date for us. But that’s okay. I gave Logan 20 bucks and he bought me pizza and snuggled with me while we watched a movie!  Pretty great day if I do say so myself!

P.S. The letters on the door are my example letters. His letters are hung in his room. (And there’s cut-out letters on the back of the bathroom door. He tends to take awhile to finish his business sometimes – useful space to subliminally teach :)

alphabet, C, learning, letters

We finished B yesterday so this morning I took down all the B stuff and slowly started putting C’s up. He had no interest in helping this morning really but that’s alright.

He’s always up for the project!  Today is a crab (seen first at Totally Tots.) He wanted him to be grumpy but I talked him into crabby since he’s a crab and all!

We talked about all the fridge items too (cow, chameleon, cat, cake, celery) and he helped me arrange the C’s on the fridge.  And he loves changing clothes – hence the hat and tie with gym pants – so there’s a bonus C for today!

Hey! Chin starts with C!

We wrote all the body parts on him (ones that he needs to look in the mirror to see, I write backwards so they look right to him). Cheek, Chin, Chest, and Calf.

For lunch we added cheetos and cheese to his plate for the letter C. For snack we’ll have carrots and cucumbers.

And it snowed last night (and still is kinda) so he wanted to spend time near the window today (especially because Daddy played out in the snow with him for 40 minutes!). So I got him to connect-the-dots without much persuasion today! (using Crayola Window Crayons)

He even made some dots for me to trace today (upper right).

We’ve also ready plenty of books. “The Icky Sticky Chameleon” made the C’s click best for him.

I really wanted to do a “cooking” activity or make cookies or cake with him. But with tomorrow being Valentine’s Day (and the huge box of candy (another C!) that Grammie sent in the mail…) I figured we’d had enough sweets without adding a batch of cookies to the pantry!

He definitely can identify a “C” without issue. Truly could before we even began today. But it’s such a tricky letter that it’s hard to make some connections…/ck/, /ce/, /ch/…they’re all c’s but they sound nothing alike…But at least we’re identifying and the rest will come in time!

Letter C day:

  • Crabby Crab paper craft  (see above)
  • Cats
  • Crayons
  • Cars
  • Clock
  • Clothes
  • Clouds
  • Caterpillar
  • Chameleon
  • Cake
  • Cookie
  • Cave
  • Cartwheels
  • Crawling
  • Clapping
  • Crab-walking
  • Songs: Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?  If you’re happy and you know it (Clap your hands!)
  • Label “C” body parts: Calf, Chin, Cheek, Chest
  • Special snacks: Cucumbers, Carrots, Cheetos, Cheese

alphabet, B, learning, letters

Letter “B” began a little rockier than “A” but I see this as a good sign. Letter B was one that was a little fuzzy because it’s not meaningful in our family. So he kinda knew it before but had to think. So I’m glad to see it took him longer to grasp the “B” shape because it means we really are accessing previous knowledge (I knew this but it’s still reassuring).

This time I took down all the “A” stuff in the middle of the afternoon and then got out all the “B’s” and slowly started putting them around the house with him watching. He helped with a few but mostly just watched me as he was playing on the floor. Then as I set out the flash cards and other miscellaneous objects (a Barn magnet, pictures of Birds, pictures of Bunnies…) we said the word together and I showed him a “B” while saying “/b/ (think “buh”), /b/, bunny!” to each object. He still thought he should be saying “A” so the whole concept is a little foreign – but what can you expect for day 2???  But by the end of the day he was identifying “B’s” left and right.

Daddy talked him into saying “Beeeeeee” instead of “cheese.” So cheesy! :)

So today we made a Bee out of the letter “B” (Yellow bees on the fridge) (I saw it first at Totally Tots.)

He made a necklace by stringing blue cereal (old stale Froot Loops) on a new shoestring (good added math lesson here with sorting colors into groups). Glued the blue cereal into a B shape (the most focused I’ve ever seen him on a gluing activity!)

And <Bonus!> this week at library storytime the story was about a bunny and they made bunnies for their project! I love it when the universe ties things together for me!

We talked about all sorts of B words: Balloons, Balls, Blue, Black, Brown, Buttons, Bicycles, Buses, Boats, Babies, Bears, Birds, Bubbles, Bumblebees, Butterflies, Baseballs, Basketballs, Brush, Bugs…

We wrote “Back,” and “Belly” on body parts with washable marker. (Could have done “Butt” but we get enough butt jokes in the house. Didn’t feel like adding to it).

He did a balancing exercise (Daddy stretches after he works out at home, so Logan stretched his quads – but mostly just balanced on one foot). (It’s SUPER cold here or we would have gone on a walk and balanced on all his favorite curbs – which he does on every walk anyway!) He also thought it was great that Bounce and Boing start with B!

We also had Broccoli for dinner. And we made Banana Bread for a snack. Hard to wait an hour to eat it – but worth it!

Favorite song for today was “Baby Bumblebee” though I did try to get him to sing “B-I-N-G-O,” “The Wheels on the Bus,” and “The Hokey Pokey.”

I feel a little silly doing it this way – but maybe it’ll stick better this time?  Here’s hoping!

Ooh, and when I asked if he knew what came next, he figured out it would be C! He’s one smart little cookie when he’s trying!

Letter B day:

  • Buzzing Bumblebee paper craft  (see above)
  • Balloons
  • Balls
  • Blue
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Buttons
  • Bicycles
  • Buses
  • Boats
  • Babies
  • Bears
  • Birds
  • Bubbles
  • Bumblebees
  • Butterflies
  • Baseballs
  • Basketballs
  • Brush (teeth and hair)
  • Bugs
  • Balancing
  • Boing
  • Bounce
  • Songs: Baby Bumblebee, B-I-N-G-O, The Wheels on the Bus, Hokey Pokey (emphasis on back, belly, and butt)
  • Label “B” body parts: Belly, Back, (Butt)
  • Special snacks: Bananas, Broccoli, Banana Bread (made together)

A, alphabet, learning, letters

I have a bachelor’s in early childhood education. The program I completed had a high emphasis on the Reggio Emilia theory which basically teaches that children learn through meaningful play and a teacher’s job is to observe and facilitate that play. The environment is also highly important and is considered a “teacher.” Having had this as my background (and a mother who did not take any of her children to preschool) I figured my best bet with Logan was to be with him everyday, take any opportunity to teach and learn right along side him and let the education take us where it will.

And that’s all fine and dandy. He was learning the alphabet slowly (the letters that were more important to him he knew without blinking. Others (like Q and F…) were a little fuzzy but he could get them if given a little context.) I thought, this is great! We’re getting somewhere but he’s not getting stressed out in the process. He was even “reading” in the sense that he would tell me stories relating to the pictures and would recognize symbols as words (a stop sign says “stop” and so forth).

And then it all quit. I had no idea what happened!  He still knew “L” and “O”. But that was it. No longer did a stop sign mean “stop.” I’d learned that major digression was a sign that something was wrong in the environment…but nothing was wrong that I could see. And it wasn’t just the knowledge that took a back-slide. It was his attitude. His manners. His ability to be nice to any moving object. All of a sudden I was raising a BOY!  Some new things he’s doing are awesome – he’s pretending, doing new physical feats (sometimes highly dangerous ones…), and playing on his own more. Which are all great. BUT why can’t he remember the letters he used to know so well???  (And other pieces of knowledge – but for some reason the letters are really bugging me right now.)

SO…..a long story, kept really long…..we’re learning the alphabet in our house. Again. This time I’m taking a more direct approach and being very obvious about my intentions. The last 1-1/2 days were spent on “A” and he gets it again! (I can see the knowledge is there somewhere, it’s just locked in his brain and I have to trigger it again.)

We created an alligator out of the letter A. (I saw it first at Totally Tots.)

And everything we did that included an “A” (focusing only on capitals for now) got talked about until it was beaten like a dead horse. Airplanes, Apes, Apricots, Apples, Applesauce, Acorn, Ants, Anteaters, Arms, Ankles, Angry…literally anything I said that had the letter “A” at the beginning got talked about. A lot. We wrote the word “Arm” on his arms with washable marker. “Ankle” on his ankles. Taped letter “A’s” all over the house. Traced “A’s” on the windows (with window crayons). I put “A’s” under the glass-top coffee table so he sub-consciously saw them as he ate breakfast (Yes, we’re bad parents, we let him eat breakfast in front of PBS shows. It’s either this or stink all the time because we’d never get showers!)  I even got grumpy about reading and would only read books if it had a lot of capital “A’s” in it. (He loves books so it’s not like this is a sacrifice!)  “Airplanes” was the favorite book. Probably read that silly book at least 6 times the first day.

And he gets it! For now…

On to B!

Letter A day:

  • Angry Alligator paper craft  (see above)
  • Airplanes
  • Apes
  • Ants
  • Anteaters
  • Acorns
  • Songs: The Ants Go Marching, and Hokey Pokey (emphasis on arms and ankles)
  • Label “A” body parts: Arm, Ankle
  • Special snacks: Apricots (he loves the dried ones), Apple slices with “A” carved into the skins, Applesauce
